What happened

image

Following the steps of the anti-consumer companies Adobe and Epic Games, now Discord is forcing users out of their accounts until they click on a button to "agree" - by force - to their new changed Terms of Service.

Literally blackmailing users with their accounts, the access to their communities and contacts, to force them to "agree". This is an unacceptable abuse and should never be tolerated.

What to do

it is obvious: contact friends that use this application to add you in more user-respecting apps, like Signal, and leave behind those who do not want to do this effort to keep contact with you. True friends won't force you into abusive applications.

Since this came seemingly out of nowhere, there's some ways to temporarily still use Discord while by skipping their abusive forced "agreement" screen - that you should use to help your contacts get into a better app, since this can be patched out anytime. On Android phones it's possible to temporarily skip this Abuse Screen by tapping back on the phone. On web-browser it's possible to use your ad-block to block the Abuse Screen elements from the page.

Update 2026: Matrix/Element is the closest alternative in terms of features, just avoid their main homeserver (subject to UK's tyranny).

Conclusion

In my opinion this situation is more than a disrespect to users, more than a blackmail and more than abuse, this is eroding the very dignity of each user of the application.

As soon as I can get my closest contacts to a user-respecting application, Discord will be completely purged from my devices.
